There is always a first time for everything, just ask Daniel Fourie (20) from Plattekloof who became an instant millionaire on Friday 1 July in the first competition he ever entered. And even though multiple entries were allowed in Tyger Valley Centre's Win a Million competition, Daniel entered only once, when he bought a leather strap to the value of R400 at Watch Republic.
His entry was drawn out of more than 100 000 entries. "I was still at work and wasn't present at the draw. I received a voicemail message on my phone and didn't recognise the number. I dialed 121 and heard that I was the winner of the million Rand. I phoned Laretha Blom, marketing manager at Tyger Valley Centre, and when she congratulated me on being the winner, I was speechless," says Daniel.
"Our Win a Million competition was running for the past four months and it was a once-off competition of this magnitude. All that was required was to spend R350 at any store in Tyger Valley, attach the till slip to the entry form and pop it in one of our entry boxes. We received more than a 100 000 entries.
All entrants held their breath for the day of the draw, keeping their entries flowing in until 12:00 noon on 30 June, however there could only be one winner and our lucky victor was Daniel. "His entry was pulled out by one of the acrobats from the Zip Zap Circus who mesmerised and hyped the crowd up before the big announcement," says Laretha. Being a generous young man, Daniel decided to share his prize money. "I took R350 000 for myself, gave R100 000 to my church and the rest to my parents. I am busy buying a Volkswagen Polo TSI and upgraded my phone with my share of the money.
This is my gap year and my life goes on as normal," says Daniel. Laretha congratulated Daniel on behalf of Tyger Valley Centre. "This was Daniel's chance to make every dream a reality, and he did! After all, at Tyger Valley, it's all about you!"
